When my husband and I first started shopping for toddler furniture, we focused mostly on the things we could immediately see: the size, color, style, or whether pieces fit in her room. But piece after piece failed in one area or another, with poor quality materials, flimsy unstable designs, so many companies even selling pieces that didn’t even meet basic CPSC safety regulations (looking at you, toddler towers). This changed the way we looked at kids furniture, and directly influenced how we design and craft every Bergwood piece. The way a piece is built doesn't usually get much attention, but it has a significant impact on how it looks, how long it lasts, and how it holds up to everyday use.

At Bergwood, every piece is assembled using concealed mortise and tenon joinery paired with cam screws and locking hardware. While those terms may not mean much to most parents, the results absolutely do.

Most children’s furniture brands rely on exposed screws or visible structural joints, often using fasteners designed for general construction rather than finished furniture - yep, the amount of literal deck screws we saw in our market research shocked us. These approaches are faster and less expensive, but they leave behind visible hardware that can make a piece feel unfinished, visually unappealing, and even less safe.

Our approach is different.

By combining traditional mortise and tenon joinery with modern locking hardware, we create strong internal connections that hide out of sight. This allows our pieces to maintain a clean, smooth birch surface with no rows of screw heads or exposed metal parts. The result is a more refined look that blends into your home while also reducing small external details that little hands can pick at.
